I identify as a lesbian/queer cis-woman and hold a welcoming therapeutic space for all identities. I believe in the premise “towards not away” and that embrace of our emotions can lead to greater awareness and insight. They can serve as guides to our inner and outer world, so long as we’re willing to listen.
My own therapeutic experiences deeply impacted the individual I am today and helped me find my own path towards an inner sense of calm and purpose. I am currently a graduate student at the University of Denver studying International Disaster Psychology: Trauma and Global Mental Health.
My experience includes working with individuals dealing with OCD, disordered eating, and anxiety and depression symptoms. I value diverse perspectives and lead with an open heart and open mind. My hope is to create a safe space where you become your own most powerful resource in healing and wellbeing, that carries with you far beyond the session.
I honor, as well as aspires to create, spaces where all identities feel safe and welcome. I whole heartedly believe that none of us are inherently broken, all we need is empathy and guidance to become the best version of ourselves. As an up and coming therapist, I am on a constant journey of growth and education. This allows me to approach and see therapeutic spaces and alliances with an open-mind and willingness to aid you in your own personal journey of growth.
As a bilingual, Puerto Rican, therapist in training, my goal is to create a space where the diversity of experiences, be they individual or relational, can be explored with compassion and curiosity. As a student clinician, my approach and therapeutic style are constantly evolving, always searching for new ways to help clients reach their most authentic selves – while continuously fomenting a working relationship that positions the client as an equal with an innate skill set capable of change.
I believe that we are an amalgam of our lived experiences and that it’s those lived experiences that provide us with the frameworks which help us navigate our lives.Sometimes, our lived experiences provide us with the tools to survive but not necessarily to live in our most authentic truth. This could manifest as a disconnection between you and others as well as disconnection with yourself. If any of this resonates with you and you’d like to learn new lifelong skills to transform your life and your relationships, I invite you to take this first step towards change. I currently work with couples (Monogamous & Ethically Non-Monogamous Relationships), LGBTQIA+ Folx, Sexual & Gender identity issues, Shame & Trauma, Substance Use, and cultural topics. I look forward to hearing more about your story!
I am a graduate student at the University of Denver, currently working towards obtaining my master’s degree in International Disaster Psychology: Trauma and Global Mental Health. My bachelor’s degree is from the Universidad de Puerto Rico en Cayey in Psychology and Community Mental Health. As a professional with a formal mental health education from Latinx and American institutions, I am able to integrate both to create a unique approach to therapeutic spaces.
Choosing to gaze inward can be a strong yet vulnerable path, tuned to your unique life experience. Opting to be seen in these moments is a monumental process. With YOU as the empowered expert of your life, we will navigate the transpersonal realm to jointly explore and make meaning of issues. From in utero to present moment, increasing mindful awareness and discovery is a method to alter well-worn paths within. Utilizing mind, body and intentional honesty in session can flex cognition and expand new potential sequences.Whether couples counseling or individual, I honor your integrity and bravery.
I welcome all of your identities and strive to create a safe space where you feel empowered to show up fully as you are. I specialize in guiding clients grappling with depression, anxiety, isolation, sexual identity, gender identity, spiritual crisis and integration, religious trauma, personal and spiritual inquiry, career change and other life transitions.
My approach to therapy is to accompany my clients in rediscovering their true self, their source of self-compassion, their innate healing power, their autonomy, and their personal authority.
I believe in therapy because it has been a key tool in my own healing journey. Growing up as a gay/queer cisgender male in a conservative religious community left me struggling with worthlessness. I felt divorced from my body, my spirit, and the wider world around me. I found self-compassion and healing through my work with caring therapists, mindfulness meditation, and personal inquiry.
I collaborate with clients to address the psychology of the whole person. I work primarily from a person-centered approach and am training in techniques such as Gestalt, Internal Family Systems (IFS), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and somatic interventions. When it fits the client, I like to incorporate mindfulness meditation to help clients build resilience and self-resourcing skills. I am passionate about these approaches because I’ve personally witnessed how using these techniques to integrate mind and body can enable profound healing.
Prior to becoming a counselor, I worked first as a molecular biologist, then as a software engineer. Although I found both fields interesting, I found that my real passion was exploring how my own mind worked and healing the false body-mind split. The more I discovered, the more passion I felt to share that experience with others.
I hold a BA in Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology/French Language from the University of Colorado at Boulder, and am completing my master’s degree from Naropa University in Clinical Mental Health Counseling in the Mindfulness-Based/Transpersonal concentration.
After confronting devastating questions of sexuality and gender with parents who pastored a conservative church, Isaac quickly realized there were very few resources for his family. He also learned that there were very few safe places where he could learn about his true identity without judgment or predetermined agendas. Over 10 years later, Isaac has grown the iAmClinic team to 10+ therapists and launched a sister company, iAmCouncil, to provide life and relationship coaching to individuals nationwide!
I chose counseling because I was once a young closeted kid that felt incredibly lonely, anxious, and lost. In wanting to heal and grow, it was important for me to find the answers for kids like me and families like mine, so that we could all experience the true connection and utter satisfaction I so deeply craved. It was with this motivation that iAmClinic was born. Before iAmClinic and the completion of my graduate studies, I spent time working in Child Protection and served as a project supervisor for a counseling program in the nonprofit world. I also worked in the main operating room at The Children’s Hospital.
As a professional counselor, I use the techniques and insights given to the field of talk therapy by seminal authors/researchers like Pia Mellody, Terrence Real, Peter Levine, and Bessel van der Kolk. I interweave research-based modalities like Neurofeedback, Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, and Somatic Experiencing, as well as empirically-based theories such as Attachment Theory, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and Feminist Theory into my practice. As I stepped out of the closet with anxiety, depression, and many unwanted behavioral patterns, I saw my healing journey as not only personally necessary, but as professionally worth it. I not only wanted to talk the talk, but also walk the walk. And as a clinician I believe it is important to be equipped with the knowledge, treatment interventions, and the skills to be effective in all facets of my clients lives so that I can offer the healing that changed my life to others. I believe in therapy, not because I have read a bunch of books, but because I am one major success story. When clients walk out of my office for the last time, I want them to feel the same liberty, connectedness, and internal peace therapy helped me discover.

For many, families are the bedrock of society, providing love, support, and a sense of belonging. However, for many LGBTQIA+ individuals and families, the journey to building healthy, affirming relationships can be fraught with challenges. From navigating societal stigma and discrimination to addressing internalized negative beliefs, families with a queer- or trans-identifying member often face unique hurdles that can strain their connections and well-being.
This is where queer family therapy comes in– a specialized approach to mental health support that recognizes and validates the distinct experiences and identities of LGBTQIA+ individuals and families. By fostering a safe, inclusive, and affirmative environment, queer family therapists can help LGBTQIA+ clients navigate the complexities of their relationships, identities, and lived experiences.
The Importance of Culturally Competent Therapy
For too long, the mental health field has been dominated by heteronormative and cisnormative perspectives, failing to adequately address the specific needs and challenges faced by the LGBTQIA+ community. Queer AND Trans family therapies challenge this status quo by centering the voices, experiences, and identities of LGBTQIA+ individuals and families.
Culturally competent therapists understand the unique stressors and challenges faced by LGBTQIA+ families, such as navigating coming out processes, addressing internalized homophobia or transphobia, as well as dealing with differences in religious beliefs and societal stigmas and discrimination. They also recognize the intersectionality of identities, acknowledging how factors like race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, and disability can compound the experiences of LGBTQIA+ individuals and families.
By creating a space where clients feel truly seen, heard, and validated, queer family therapists can help LGBTQIA+ individuals and their families build resilience, acceptance, and healthy coping mechanisms. A culturally competent therapist will help you prioritize your attachment over winning a debate.
1.Coming Out and Identity Formation: The process of coming out and embracing one’s LGBTQIA+ identity can be complex and emotionally charged, impacting family dynamics and relationships.
2.Societal Stigma, Religion, and Discrimination: LGBTQIA+ individuals and families continue to face stigma, discrimination, and marginalization in various aspects of their lives, which can take a toll on their mental health and relationships.
3.Family Rejection and Estrangement: Unfortunately, many LGBTQIA+ individuals experience rejection or estrangement from their families of origin due to their identities, leading to feelings of loss, grief, and trauma.
4.Legal and Systemic Barriers: LGBTQIA+ families may face legal and systemic barriers when it comes to issues like marriage equality, adoption rights, and access to healthcare, adding additional stress and uncertainty to their lives.
5. Intersectionality and Compounded Marginalization: LGBTQIA+ individuals who hold multiple marginalized identities (e.g., race, ethnicity, disability) may experience compounded forms of oppression and discrimination, further impacting their well-being and relationships.
Through queer family therapy, LGBTQIA+ individuals and families can find support in navigating these challenges, processing their experiences, and building resilience and healthy coping strategies. Start your journey today with iAmClinic!
Therapeutic Approaches and Best Practices
Queer family therapists employ a range of therapeutic approaches and best practices to best support their LGBTQIA+ clients. These may include:
1. Affirmative Therapy: This approach focuses on validating and affirming LGBTQIA+ identities, experiences, and relationships, rather than pathologizing or attempting to change them.
2. Intersectional Lens: Recognizing and addressing the intersections of multiple marginalized identities and their impact on mental health and well-being.
4. Strengths-Based Approach: Focusing on the resilience, strengths, and assets of LGBTQIA+ individuals and families, rather than solely emphasizing deficits or problems.
5. Family Systems Theory: Understanding and addressing the complex dynamics and interactions within LGBTQIA+ family systems, including chosen families and families of origin.
6. Advocacy and Community Engagement: Providing resources, referrals, and connections to LGBTQIA+ community organizations and support systems.
By employing these approaches and best practices, queer family therapists can create a safe, affirming, and transformative space for LGBTQIA+ individuals and families to heal, grow, and thrive.
Finding Culturally Competent Support
If you are an LGBTQIA+ individual or family seeking mental health support, it is crucial to find a therapist or counselor who is culturally competent and affirming of your identities and experiences. Here are some tips for finding the right queer family therapist:
Find a therapist who identifies as part of the LGBTQIA+ community.
Look for therapists who specialize in LGBTQIA+ issues or queer family therapy.
Check if the therapist has received specific training or certifications in LGBTQIA+ affirmative therapy.
Read reviews or testimonials from other LGBTQIA+ clients to gauge the therapist’s cultural competence and affirmative approach.
Ask about the therapist’s approach to intersectionality and how they address multiple marginalized identities.
Inquire about the therapist’s involvement or connections with the local LGBTQIA+ community.
Trust your instincts – if a therapist makes you feel uncomfortable or invalidated, it’s okay to seek out someone else.
Queer family therapy represents a powerful and necessary approach to supporting the unique needs and experiences of LGBTQIA+ individuals and families. By fostering a culturally competent, affirmative, and inclusive environment, queer family therapists can help their clients navigate the complexities of their identities, relationships, and lived experiences.
Whether it’s addressing internalized negative beliefs, processing trauma, building resilience, or strengthening family connections, queer family therapy offers a transformative space for healing, growth, and self-acceptance. Because it is an imperative to embrace diversity, the importance of culturally competent mental health support for the LGBTQIA+ community cannot be overstated.
If you or a loved one are seeking queer family therapy services, remember that you deserve to feel seen, heard, and validated in your identities and experiences. With the right support and resources, LGBTQIA+ individuals and families can build strong, healthy, and affirming relationships that celebrate their authentic selves.

I work with clients to explore who they are, where they want to go and how they will get there. Often this looks like walking alongside my clients as they untangle their authentic parts of self from internalized shame and societal pressures in order to step into their own self-authored story. I incorporate mindfulness and narrative therapy techniques in my work, infused with cognitive information/cognitive behavioral modalities. Additionally, I am EMDR trained and use this in both mental health and career counseling settings.
Outside of work, I am an active volunteer in the National Career Development Association (NCDA), a branch of the American Counseling Association, serving as a co-chair for the Leadership Academy and prior on the Government Relations Committee. Discover LGBTQIA+ Affirming Therapy Options Covered by Medicaid.
Why Inclusive Counseling Matters
Transgender individuals often face a myriad of obstacles, both internally and externally, that can impact their mental health and relationships. Not only is the coming-out process challenging, but also discrimination, stigma, and a lack of understanding from society can contribute to feelings of confusion, anxiety, and depression. When seeking marriage counseling, it’s essential to find a therapist who not only understands the complexities of relationships but also has the knowledge and sensitivity to work with transgender clients.
Inclusive marriage counseling acknowledges and validates the experiences of transgender individuals and couples. It creates a non-judgmental space where clients can openly discuss their gender identity, the impact of transitioning on their relationship, and any other related concerns. By working with a therapist who affirms their identity, transgender couples can feel more comfortable and empowered to work through their challenges.
Unique Challenges in Trans Relationships
Trans couples often encounter specific and complex challenges:
Navigating Gender Identity
Transitioning Together: When one partner transitions, it can significantly alter the relationship dynamics, necessitating adaptation and mutual support.
Internalized Transphobia: Many trans individuals struggle with internalized negative beliefs, which can harm self-esteem and relationship satisfaction.
Social and Family Dynamics
Coming Out Journey: The process of coming out, whether individually or as a couple, can be filled with anxiety and stress, impacting how the relationship functions.
Family Acceptance Issues: A lack of acceptance from family members can lead to emotional distress and conflicts within the relationship.
Health and Well-being Considerations
Access to Competent Healthcare: Finding healthcare providers who are knowledgeable about trans-specific needs can be challenging and stressful.
Mental Health Concerns: Addressing mental health issues such as depression and anxiety is essential for maintaining a healthy and fulfilling relationship.
Inclusive marriage counseling addresses these challenges by providing a supportive space to process emotions, develop coping strategies, and strengthen communication skills. Therapists can help couples navigate the complexities of transition, build resilience, and foster a deeper understanding and help uncover the path that feels authentic and safe for the couple.
Overcoming Challenges Through Counseling
Transgender couples face unique challenges that can strain their relationships, such as navigating the transition process, dealing with societal stigma, and coping with mental health concerns. However, with the help of specialized marriage counseling, these couples can overcome obstacles and build stronger, more resilient partnerships.
Trans-inclusive marriage counseling provides a safe, supportive space for couples to discuss their experiences, fears, and hopes related to the transition process. Therapists can help couples develop effective communication strategies, foster empathy, and create a shared vision for their future. Counseling can also help couples learn strategies for managing stress, setting boundaries, and building a strong support system to cope with external pressures.
Furthermore, marriage counseling can address mental health challenges that may impact the individual and the relationship. By processing emotions, developing coping strategies, and strengthening resilience, couples can work towards overall well-being and a healthier partnership.
Ultimately, trans-inclusive marriage counseling helps couples build the skills needed to overcome challenges and create a loving, supportive relationship. By working with a knowledgeable, affirming therapist, transgender couples in Denver can navigate the complexities of their relationship and build a strong foundation for a thriving partnership.
